New Afternoon Host Announced

Al Roney Joins WGDJ

Paul Vandenburgh announced today that Al Roney has been hired to host the afternoon program beginning on Monday, June 21st. Roney will host the Monday thru Friday shift from 2 to 6pm each afternoon. He will broadcast from the WGDJ TALK 1300 studios located in the Times Union Center in Albany.

Roney is a market veteran who has covered the Capital District for over a decade. He is not only a well known talk show host but has also been an established newscaster and traffic reporter in the region. He most recently served as a talk show host and newscaster at WGY and before that was a newscaster at 590 WROW.

“Al brings a strong news talk background to TALK1300”, said WGDJ President and General Manager Paul Vandenburgh. “Al and I worked together in the past and to obtain someone of his talent and background is a major plus for us, our listeners and the Capital District.”  “He will be driving the agenda in the Capital District every afternoon on the ride home and will deliver a strong product.”

Roney will begin on Monday June 21st.

I am thrilled that Al Roney will be broadcasting again. I was so upset when he lost his job. I listened to Al everyday.
You are building such a wonder line-up of hosts, starting with yourself. I love Dennis Prager, I just love Al Roney, and your new Red Eye program from 1 to 5 Am is Great.
    Congratulations!!!

  2. don jones says:

welcome al and good luck !

  3. Carol (Colonie) says:

Paul’s announcement today, that Al Roney has been hired as the new afternoon host MADE MY DAY! I am so happy and can’t wait to hear him again. Boy, I missed that guy! I have already programmed my car radio…button number 1 is 1300! Thank You!

  4. Donald Gordineer says:

Have never listened to 1300am. But you have a new listener now.

  5. Jim McDonald says:

Good choice. Glad to see that Al is back. I thought he really grew into the job at 590. I did enjoy Kelly and I hope that you find some time slots for her.

  6. Pete from Johnstown says:

Kudos, Paul and partners! I and thousands of soon-to-be WGDJ listeners applaud your choice of new PM host.

Congratulations, Al! It couldn’t have come to a better and more qualified guy.

And as I now depart my office for the day…I will be a man of my word and save 1300 into memory at position 1 on AM station menu.

The posse and I anxiously await 2PM on June 21st…and ongoing afternoons thereafter!

  7. Steve K in Cohoes says:

Thank you Paul Vandenburg for putting Al Roney on the air again. WGY lost me as a dedicated, daily listener when they fired him. And in turn you have won me as a dedicated, daily listener with this move. Al gave a voice to normal, everyday people and called out people on the tough issues that affect the Capital Region, State and beyond. Welcome back Al! Can’t wait till June 21st.

  8. Mom of two from Albany says:

I will be a new listener to this station. I had loved to listen to Al talk about local issues and have missed his program very much. I am so happy to have a chance to hear him again. Thank you Mr. Vandenburgh!

  9. Dieter Drake says:

Outstanding. Al is first-rate. Congrats to the station and to Al.

  10. Dolores G says:

Thanks to you Mr.Vandenburg. I have missed
listening to Al very much. My radio will be
tuned to 1300 from now on. Also, congrats
Al– so good to have you back!! You have a “LONG” list of anxious listeners waiting
    for your return.

  11. Ken from Malta says:

Thank you, Paul! That ‘other station’ has turned it’s back on local issues and canceling Al was an outrage! He is the PERFECT choice for this time slot with his great energy and creativity. I wish you good ratings and many sponsors!!!

  12. suzanne sykes says:

FINALLY! You can’t put a good man down!

  13. jj says:

GREAT NEWS !!! im a new listener to this station starting june 21st !!!
    welecome back AL !!!

  14. LARRY SMITH says:

YOU JUST LOST ME-NEVER HEARD A TALK SHOW HOST WHO LIKED THE SOUND OF HIS OWN VOICE MORE THAN HAVING TRUE DISCUSSIONS WITH CALLERS. I MISS YOU, DAN!

  15. Thank you Mr. Vandenburgh for bringing Al Rooney back to talk radio. We were outraged when WGY let him go so another extremest right winger could monopolize the airwaves. We missed Al’s wit, humor and concern for the people of our area. He discussed issues we were interested in and actually listened to his callers. His adjenda was our adjenda.
We now know where to turn the dial each afternoon. WGJD 1300 has two new listeners.

  16. Ted says:

I’ll give Al a shot, but I can not believe he will be able to adequately fill Dan’s shoes. Dan Lynch was the finest public affairs host this region has ever seen, the only one who seems willing to do something other than roll around naked in a pile of cliches, histrionics, and partisan talking points. Radio is simply not “for people who think” any more, and I for one feel the lack. Come back, Dan!

  17. Yeah – Al is coming back. When I first heard that 1300 was looking for an afternoon host I was hoping it would be Al. 1300 will now be programmed in my car. Thanks 1300. And Welcome Back Al – Your listeners have been waiting patiently for you.

  18. Mark in Saratoga says:

Great news and welcome back Al! I hope 1300 smokes that other station now!

  19. Barb from Albany says:

I’m glad you are bringing Al Roney back. WGY lost me a long time ago. I will miss Kelly though. Please try to put her on more than once a week!

  20. Eddie G says:

Al, glad to hear your back….Paul V knows his stuff and that’s why your joining the best talk show in the north east.

  21. donna s says:

welcome back al, you have been greatly missed. i only wish i could get 1300 in better. i will listen on the comouter instead of radio thank goodness. your voice has been missed.

  22. paul itzo says:

    Paul,

    Say it isn’t so!

Replacing Dan Lynch with another regurgitated right wing commercial? Mr. Roney was let go at his last gig for providing his 48 listeners with a no debate Glen Beck “lite” act.

I have always enjoyed your morning show and Fred Dicker each day, but the remainder of your lineup is presently kind of tired.
Preaching to the converted is not fair to your leftest AND right wing listeners. Have this youngster try something non political and I bet he will make you proud.

  23. Jeremy (Medusa, NY) says:

Perfect!! Not only am I now a 1300 listener, I know many friends & family that will now be tuning in…Thank you.

@paul itzo… Apparently you have never listened to Al or you listened too little (or you’re just the same old whiny windbag that crys about anything you disagree with). He IS NOT a “regurgitated right wing commercial”… He’s about the most unbiased personality on the radio locally. Try actually listening instead of drawing ignorant right/left lines in your little sandbox.

  24. i with many others, can’t wait for al. it will be great to hear LOCAL news and not something i rarely know what the guy is talking about. get the capital district ‘s blood pressure back up.

  25. I’m excited that Al is back on the air; he will be a solid addition to TALK 1300 and a game changer in afternoon drive. He’s a proven, interesting host. I’ve admired his gifted, compelling style, and he’s always done a thought provoking solid show. Stimulating talk radio in PM Drive – It’s great to hear you again, Al !

  26. paul itzo says:

    Jeremy,

Al unbiased, are you kidding? I suffered dearly when he was over at, “That other station”. As for being non partisan, He was the tea party recruiter at the capital or have you forgotten this? It was all on the radio! To call this kid “fair and balanced” is akin to calling Glen Beck the same. Sorry I offended you, but if you want a fair radio personality try Fred Dicker. He is an experienced intelligent host that dosn’t just feed us red meat each day but actually educates his listeners. Fred tells it the way it is weather you are a democrat or republican. This is probably why he has been around for so long. Don’t know what Paul was thinking, Rooney was let go recently.

PS Surprise! I am a registered independent voter and I can assure you that there is plenty of stupidity in both parties. Please don’t draw conclusions just because I disagree with your take on Al.

  27. Chris B says:

My husband and I are thrilled to hear you are back on air. Local boy, great sence of humor and very entertaining. We were so very disappointed when he went off the air. Everything happens for a reason… all things work for our greater good.
    Preace!!! Best of luck!!!

  28. Jesse says:

Talk 1300 has another listener, right here now. Thank you.

  29. TweetyBird says:

I miss Dr Laura and Dan. I learned new things from both.

  30. MikeLI631 says:

Rooney is just another “big city” Big Mouth.

Kelly Stevens elevates the Radio Talk with softer, more thoughtful touch…
actual constructive conversation, NOT JUST ANOTHER Talk Radio monologist, who likes to listen to himself talk, and natter on mindless to the Audience !

Talk Radio is NOT a one way street, there is an audience out there, who wants to participate…even if they don’t actually call in !
