Get Some Workout of Her – First Day of Training

Today was my first “official” workout with Bryan and although I am excited to tell you about it I should back up a little bit. Yesterday when I was at Omni Fitness, Bryan had me try out the  Arc Trainer for the first time. That machine is amazing! My heart was pumping, I was sweating like crazy and I just felt good. That will be a machine that I will use on a regular basis on this program.

Bryan has documented everything that I will be doing and the methodology behind it on his blog and I think that you will find it interesting.

When I got to Omni Fitness this morning, Bryan had me do an initial 5 minute fast treadmill walk as a warm-up. The goal was to break a sweat and get my heart rate up. Then it was time for the “torture”. Bryan has created an extensive circuit training program that will suit my specific needs (again, check out his blog). The circuit training portion of today’s program lasted about an hour – and by the end my legs felt like Jello (but that is good – right?). I think the hardest exercises for me were the “traveling lunges with arm curls” – my legs were actually shaking as I did them – but Bryan was fantastic and pushed me through. All the exercises were hard, but none of them impossible. The squat thrusts with the medicine ball were probably pretty funny to watch – as I kept tripping – but my coordination will improve, but again, Bryan was extremely motivating and kept me going.

After the hour of training with Bryan – I then did 50 minutes of cardio (30 minutes on the treadmill and 20 minutes on the Arc Trainer). When I was done, my shirt was actually soaked through with sweat – but I felt amazing. My adrenaline was flying high – and I have had less than half the amount of caffeine today than I usually do, and I am not feeling fatigued.

In the middle of the cardio - check out the red face!

Bryan and I also had a little discussion about food – and he wasn’t too happy about some of the stuff that I eat! Yikes! I have a habit of eating a lot of “chemical” ridden food – including artificial sweeteners, things made with Olestra, etc. Bryan’s told me, that when I am eating I should remember “If your grandmother doesn’t know what it is – than you shouldn’t be eating it.”  So that I what I will be thinking about from now on!

As always, please let me know how you think I am doing, and let us know if you have any questions, comments or suggestions.

  1. Oh no, not the word ‘torture’! That scares me a little, Angela. A great workout should be strenuous, and hard work, and leave you tired, but if you are working within a good heart rate window and remembering to breathe, it should not be torture!
Has your trainer talked to you about the impact on yourself of the words you use to describe your diet and sense of effort you are expending in your exercise?
If I thought every workout was torture, I’d be quick to quit.

    Kathleen,
Thanks for the insight. Torture was probably too harsh of a word.I tend to get a little over wordy. Bryan is very aware of each exercise and how much I am putting into each one. I will look into those clothes!

  3. Bryan says:

    Hi Kathleen,

Thank you for your comment and we appreciate your concern. I firmly believe Angela is using the word “torture” in jest. I assure you, although Angela’s workouts are challenging, they are appropriate for her level of fitness.

Angela’s exercise intensity is based on a subjective rating of perceived exertion(RPE)scale of 6-20(Borg Scale). Angela is encouraged to maintain an intensity level equivalent to 10-16 RPE(~69% of HRMax =133bpm, or ~50% HRR) and her condition is carefully monitored (during and post-workout) for any signs of overexertion. Please keep following her progress on her blog.

    Thank you.
