To clean unwanted items off your machine, including registry issues, you can download freeware Crap Cleaner.

Best to purchase a commercial product to manage your anti-virus and anti-malware and follow the recommendations.  PC World magazine has a nice review of some leading products.  Lavasoft has come free and paid products as well.
